Placenta is a an organ that connecting the fetus with the endometrium, responding to transport maternal oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. Simultaneously, it acts as a barrier for preventing the fetus against internal infection.
In the last trimester of pregnancy, the placenta needs to be near the uterine fundus so that the cervix prepares to dilate for delivery. If the placenta closely attachs to the cervix, it is called low implantation of placenta which can cause severe haemorrhage before or during labor.
- Uterine contractions or pain.
- Vaginal bleeding, stop and then reoccur in few days or weeks.
- Vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse.
- Vaginal bleeding occurs in the second trimester of pregnancy.
Therefore, can mothers give vaginal delivery with a low implantation of placenta?
During labor stage, the cervix is dilated to allow the baby moving descendingly and being delivered. The baby can be born vaginally if a low implantation of placenta does not interfere descending fetal pathway. In the event of a low-lying placenta with severe hemorrhage, follow-up vaginal delivery will take longer, mothers will be severely bleeded and dangerous. Accordingly, cesarean delivery is indicated to ensure maternal and fetal safety.
In case of the placenta partially or totally covers the mother’s cervix which is called total or partial placenta previa, mothers are planed for C-section as soon as signs of vaginal bleeding commence. C-section schedule is recommended by doctors in order to balance the pros and cons with the highest goal of keeping mothers and babies healthy
