Colposcopy is a procedure that looks at your cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of gynecological problems. During colposcopy, your doctor uses a special instrument called a colposcope.
You may feel nervous before your colposcopy. Knowing what to expect during colposcopy can help you feel more comfortable.
Why colposcopy?
– Your doctor may recommend a colposcopy if the results of a cervical cancer screening test or a pelvic exam show abnormalities.
– Colposcopy can be used to diagnose:
- Genital warts
- Cervicitis Precancerous
- Changes in the tissue of the cervix
- Precancerous changes in vaginal, vulvar tissue
What will the colposcopy look like?
– Colposcopy is a safe procedure. Complications from a biopsy during colposcopy are very rare, including:
- Heavy bleeding
- Infection
- Pelvic pain
– Colposcopy is usually done in the office and takes time from 10-20 minutes. You will lie down like you would during a gynecological exam.
– Your doctor places a metal speculum into your vagina. The speculum helps to lift the vaginal walls so that the doctor can see the cervix completely. Next, the doctor places a colposcope so that he can magnify the cervix and see the cervix, vagina, easy pussy. The doctor may apply 5% acetic acid and lugol to look for and identify abnormally suspected lesions. These solutions may cause you a burning sensation.
– If the doctor finds a suspicious area, a tissue sample is collected and sent for cytology testing. To collect tissue, the doctor uses a sharp biopsy instrument to press a very small piece of tissue. If there are many suspicious areas, the doctor may take multiple samples to send for testing.
Is the biopsy painful?
– Cervical biopsies are usually painless, and vaginal or vulva biopsies can be painful, so your doctor will numb the area before performing the procedure. In case of bleeding after the biopsy, the doctor will apply a hemostatic solution to the surface of the biopsy site.
What to do, after colposcopy?
– If your doctor does colposcopy alone, you won’t have any restrictions on your activities after the colposcopy. Vaginal discharge may be small for 1-2 days after examination. If you had a biopsy sample taken during colposcopy, you may sometimes experience:
- Dull vaginal or vulvar pain for 1 to 2 days
- Light vaginal bleeding for several days
- Dark discharge from the vagina
– Use a thin bandage to absorb the fluid and follow your doctor’s instructions.
– The results of the colposcopy will determine if you need further testing and treatment. You will also wait for cytology results in the event of a biopsy for further diagnosis and treatment.
- In summary, colposcopy is a completely beneficial procedure for patients and helps doctors in detecting gynecological diseases that cannot be determined by clinical examination, especially in cervical cancer screening.
