Therefore, to ensure the safety of children, parents always try to minimize their children’s exposure to dangerous things. However, children at a hyperactive age are also difficult to avoid unfortunate situations. Therefore, knowing some ways to give timely first aid to children when they encounter an accident is essential knowledge for parents. Here are how to give first aid to 6 common accidents in young children that parents need to know, let’s find out with AIH Clinic!
- If your child is bleeding, press firmly on the wound with gauze or a clean towel first until the bleeding stops (about 3-15 minutes). Rinse the wound under warm running water and gently pat dry. If the wound is dirty or scratched by an animal, wash it with water and gently rub it with soap.
- If the skin is broken, clean the wound under clean running water or physiological saline, then disinfect the wound with alcohol 70 degrees or 10% Betadine, then cover the wound with a gauze or bandage.
- If the bleeding cannot be stopped after several attempts with direct pressure, call the doctor or take the child to the emergency room.
- If there is a large patch of skin, wrap the patch in a clean, damp cloth, put it in a bag, and place it on an ice pack, your doctor can stitch it up.
- If bitten, scratched or scratched by an animal (dog, cat, etc.), the child should be taken to the hospital after first aid to be considered for rabies and/or tetanus vaccinations.
► Note: Do not put any powder, pill or folk medicine such as pipe tobacco, tobacco… on the wound.
Immediately run the burn under cool running water or apply a cool wet washcloth to the burn to soothe the pain. Cover small burns with a bandage or gauze and get the child to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible. Do not use folk methods, relieve burning pain such as using soy sauce, fish sauce … on the burn.
Have the child sit up straight, loosen the shirt around the neck. Clip the tip of the nose close to the sides of the nose or put a gauze plug on the bleeding nose, let the child bend forward while you continue to hold it for 5 – 10 minutes, do not open the clip or remove the gauze early, it may lead to prolonged bleeding than.
Use soap and water to wash around the splinter. Clean a tweezer with rubbing alcohol and gently pull out the splinter. Wash again. If the splinter is hard and difficult to remove, take the child to a medical facility for appropriate treatment.
If an insect sting leaves a stinger, use a fingernail or a plastic card to gently scratch the skin to remove the stinger, to avoid breaking the stinger. Note: Do not use tweezers to clamp on the stinger as it may cause more venom to escape. After removing the stinger, wash the wound with soap and water, then apply a cool compress or towel to the sting to reduce swelling. Hydrocortisone cream 0.5 – 1% can be applied. If there are many stings or if the sting is painful and spreading, take the child to the doctor immediately.
When your child has a lot of pain, often tears, is afraid of light, or has blurred vision after being hit in the eye, put a cool towel over the eye and immediately go to a medical facility. Your child may have a wound on the surface of the eye that will need treatment with prescription eye drops or ointment. If chemical splashes in eyes, keep eyes open, rinse with warm water and call 911.
