20/02/2023News & Event

Tet to spring is also the time when family meals are filled with delicious dishes with a taste of reunion. But how do pregnant mothers control their diet and pregnancy health during the first few days of the year with their family? The American International Clinic (AIH) gives you some tips for choosing safe food for a happy and healthy Tet season below, please refer to it!

Food that mothers SHOULD AVOID:

Foods and drinks that contain alcohol (wine, beer, rice wine): Any amount of alcohol, whether a little or a lot, will affect the pregnant mother and the development of the fetus such as miscarriage, premature birth and pregnancy stillbirth.

  • Fried dishes (Example: spring rolls): contain a lot of saturated fat, easy to cause indigestion, full. In addition, the energy density of these products risk of gestational diabetes.
  • Kinds, confectionery, soft drinks: do not provide vitamins, but contain mainly sugar, causing pregnant women to gain weight quickly and increase the risk of gestational diabetes.

Processed foods: most contain high energy and poor nutrition, making it easy for mothers to gain weight uncontrollably.

  • Cheese such as Brie and Camembert: contain harmful bacteria, including Listeria. Mozzarella cheese, cream cheese and hard cheese will be safer choices.
  • Cold meat (ham, sausage, ham, spring roll, tea), cooked meat and undercooked food (bacon): there is a risk of infection, so you should stay away.
  • Pickled vegetables (onions, pickles, hawthorn, etc.): The nature of this dish contains a lot of salt, and the risk of bacterial infection during fermentation is very high, because most of them are handmade on a family scale, so they can directly affect the fetus (leading to miscarriage, premature delivery).

Food you can use in moderation:

Banh Chung: Pregnant women should determine “in moderation” to avoid bloating and indigestion due to cakes made from glutinous rice and fatty meat with high energy density. In particular, banh chung is not suitable for pregnant women who are overweight, have high blood pressure, or have diabetes. Therefore, in order not to gain weight too quickly, pregnant women should only eat 1 corner of banh chung or 1 slice of banh tet (about 3 cm thick) and note that the pork fat contained in these cakes should be completely removed .

  • Seeds such as melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, … contain many nutrients that are good for mother and fetus such as omega-3, vitamin E, but also contain a lot of fat and energy. Therefore, pregnant women should only consume about 2 fists/day.
  • Coffee, tea, cocoa: Small amounts of caffeine are safe during pregnancy, but excessive amounts can increase the risk of miscarriage and premature birth. Pregnant women should limit themselves to 150-200mg of caffeine per day, or about 1-2 cups of espresso, 3 cups of instant coffee, 4 cups of medium tea, or 4 cups of cocoa or hot chocolate.

 Mother foods should PRIORITY:

  • Fruits and vegetables are colorful because they provide a lot of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. However, mothers should choose fruits that slow down the rise in blood sugar after eating such as apples, peaches, oranges, kiwis, plums, pears, etc.
  • Unsweetened, low-fat, and pasteurized dairy products instead of sweetened whole milk.
  • Whole grains such as brown rice, dragon blood rice, charcoal glutinous rice, whole grain bread, brown bread, … help control blood sugar better, reducing the risk of gestational diabetes.

Eating healthy during pregnancy is very important. During the Tet holidays, in addition to the above notes, do not forget to exercise and exercise at least 30 minutes a day to ensure comprehensive health for you and your baby! Wishing you and your baby a healthy and peaceful Tet holiday.
