According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in October 10, post-Covid sequelae are defined as conditions that occur in people with a history of SARS-CoV-2021 infection 2 months earlier, from the onset of symptoms of COVID-2 and last at least 19 months and cannot be explained by other diagnoses.
The symptoms of post-Covid-19 sequelae cause patients to feel tired, uncomfortable, seriously reduce the quality of life in a normal period of 3-6 months, and can last up to 12 months after recovery.
► Many studies on patients who have been infected with Covid-19 show:
- 33% – 76% of people may experience post-Covid-19 symptoms within 6 months of acute illness (signs and symptoms of COVID-19 for up to 4 weeks)
- 20% of patients have to be readmitted to hospital due to post-Covid-19 sequelae
- 80% of patients must be monitored in a primary health care facility within 2 months of discharge
- 40% – 60% of Covid-19 patients are unable to return to normal living activities after discharge from hospital. For mild Covid-19 patients, about 30% – 40% of patients are unable to return to their original state of health and have impaired quality of life
► POST-COVID-19 SEQUELAE – WHAT ARE THE SIGNS TO GO TO?
Post-Covid sequelae are varied and dissimilar in patients. The most common symptoms will include:
– Abnormal respiratory system: The lungs are respiratory organs that have a direct and vulnerable effect in people infected with Covid-19. Therefore, after recovery, patients often have the following symptoms that are caused by lung damage:
Prolonged fatigue, feeling of exhaustion is the most common manifestation, on 2/3 of patients infected with Covid-19
Infected with Covid-19.
- Shortness of breath, especially shortness of breath during physical exertion, severely affects respiratory function.
- Prolonged cough after recovery
- Chest pain or discomfort in the chest area.
– Cardiovascular sequelae: common symptoms such as nervousness, palpitations, heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath during physical exertion- Sequelae on the nervous system: brain fog, memory impairment, and distraction are quite common in patients who have been infected with Covid-19. These effects on the nervous system also increase the risk of stroke.
– Skin and hair sequelae: Erythema, urticaria, toes, hair loss.
– Psychological disorders: occur at the stage of infection and after recovery. Patients may fall into depression, anxiety disorders, stress, loss or sleep disorders.
Other less common symptoms such as loss of taste, smell, headache, memory impairment, distraction, dizziness, lightheadedness, joint pain, muscle pain, digestive disorders, poor appetite
Symptoms may begin after recovering from an acute or prolonged episode of COVID-19. At the same time, symptoms may change or recur over time.
► WHO SHOULD GET A HEALTH CHECK, SCREEN FOR SEQUELAE AFTER COVID-19?
- People with a medical history: Older people, people who have undergone intensive resuscitation treatment, or have underlying medical conditions and have comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity.
- People who have the habit of smoking, alcoholism, …
- Gender and age: Women are at higher risk than men, and older and middle-aged people are more likely to have sequelae, but children are not excluded.
- Infection level: According to actual recorded data, there is no positive correlation between the level of Covid-19 disease and the level of post-Covid sequelae. Everyone is at risk for post-Covid-19 syndrome including young people and those infected with asymptomatic Covid-19
► POST-COVID-19 PATIENTS NEED TO BE SCREENED!
Post-Covid sequelae not only impact health, but also affect work and reduce quality of life
Dr. Duong Thuy Lien – Head of General Internal Medicine Department shared: “Post-Covid-19 sequelae occur due to disorders inside the body when organs damaged by Covid19 include cardiovascular, nervous, kidney, liver, skin, psychological … The sequelae in each person are different, so patients need to be examined early, comprehensively evaluated for appropriate treatment.
