Postpartum Production | When Should You Go To The Doctor?

21/02/2023News & Event

Postpartum fluid production is a normal physiological phenomenon and is part of the recovery process after childbirth (including normal birth and cesarean section). In the first days, there may be a lot of fluid and in some cases it appears to produce blood clots such as jelly. This makes many mothers wonder if they need to go to the doctor or not. Therefore, let’s find out about this problem with American International Hospital Clinic(AIH Clinic) !

According to Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nam – Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology – American International Hospital (AIH), the components of postpartum fluid are often peeling debris of the uterine mucosa, amniotic fluid leftovers, secretions from birth wounds through the vagina, and bacteria as well as leukocytes … Due to the leukocyte composition, the implantation of fluid in case of suspected infection will be incorrect. Secretion is the body’s way of removing this excess blood and tissue from the mother’s body and helping the uterus stop bleeding. In the first 6 weeks after birth, the mother’s uterus will continue to contract to push out all the fluid and cause lower abdominal pain due to the uterus contraction.

Normally, the discharge in the first few hours after birth may be bright red blood, which then turns reddish brown or fades on day 3-4. Then the discharge becomes mucous and may have an unpleasant odor, so you may need some tampons and should change them regularly. And most moms will end up pale yellow on the 10th or 22nd.

Although the epidemic will decrease day by day, it is very common to encounter a situation where suddenly there is more production than before and if it is only transient, it may still be normal, however, you should still consult a doctor.

► Mothers do not need to worry too much if:

  • Blood clots after giving birth not more than 1 week.
  • The amount of blood clot is not much, the clot size is small.
  • Postpartum bleeding slows down from day 2 onwards and fades in color over time.
  • Postpartum discharge does not last more than 6 weeks

► However, you should see a doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Bright red bleeding after the third day after giving birth
  • Blood clots larger than an egg
  • Bleeding Absorbs a lot of tampons for 2 hours and lasts continuously.
  • Bleeding more than before
  • Sudden, prolonged abdominal pain
  • Fever, chills
  • Heart palpitations, nervousness, irritability.
  • Dizziness, fatigue., feeling that the body becomes weak.
  • Nausea, poor appetite.

These symptoms may be signs that the mother has a postpartum infection or postpartum hemorrhage. Therefore, the mother needs to be hospitalized quickly to be properly diagnosed and treated by a doctor.

At American International Hospital (AIH Clinic), doctors and nutritionists will monitor and advise specifically for the health of mothers and babies.
