Pregnant Mother With Pelvic Pain: What Should You Do?

17/02/2023News & Event

For women, pregnancy is a very meaningful and happy journey. However, they may face pelvic pain – a fairly common condition during pregnancy that has caused many difficulties for pregnant women. Although it does not harm the fetus, it makes the seemingly normal things of the mother such as walking, climbing stairs, or turning over in bed also become more difficult.

Some causes can lead to pelvic pain in pregnant women during pregnancy:

  • In the first trimester of pregnancy, pelvic pain is often due to physiological changes of the mother’s body to adapt with fetal development. The growing uterus will make the pregnant mother feel the weight of the pelvis.
  • In the second trimester, due to the stretching of the ligaments to support the uterus is growing as the baby grows. The sensation may be a sudden, brief sharp pain in the abdomen or sides, and the pain may increase with vigorous movement.
  • In the third trimester, pelvic pain tends to increase due to the growing weight of the fetus and the lower fetal movement in preparation for delivery.

So how to reduce pelvic pain during pregnancy:

► What symptoms will pregnant women have with pelvic pain?

  • Pain through the pubic bone in the front in the center, roughly level with the hip.
  • Pain on one or both sides of the lower back.
  •  Pain in the area between the vagina and anus (perineum).
  • Pain spreading to the thigh.
  • A clicking or clicking sound is felt or heard in the pelvis.
  • The pain may get worse when you do the following activities:
  • Going up or down stairs.
  • Stand on one leg (e.g. When Mom is getting dressed).
  • Turn over in bed.
  • Move Mom’s feet apart (e.g. When Pregnant Mom gets out of the car).

► How to relieve pelvic pain for pregnant women?

  • Moderate gentle activity.
  • Rest as soon as you can.
  • Wear flat shoes.
  • Daily tasks should be carried out in a sitting position (for example, changing clothes, ironing clothes, etc.)
  • Keep your knees close (for example, try to keep your feet moving when getting in and out of the car).
  • Sleep in a comfortable position (eg: Lie on your side with a pillow between your legs).
  • Try different ways to roll over in bed (e.g. Twist on your knees and squeeze your butt).
  • Step up the stairs step by step.
  • Move slowly but often to strengthen ligaments and tendons.
  • Wear a pelvic support belt for pregnant women.

► What should pregnant women do to avoid worsening of pelvic pain?

  • Lifting or carrying heavy loads.
  • Sit cross-legged.
  • Sit on the floor or squirm.
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  • Stand on one leg or stand without weight.

At the American International Clinic (AIH Clinic), doctors and nutritionists will monitor and advise specifically for each case so that pregnant women have a care plan best for the health of mother and baby.
