Post-Covid-19 condition is a concern of most recovered patients currently. Post-Covid-19 syndrome or also known as prolonged Covid-19 affects many people’s health and life, especially for people who are elder and have underlying conditions.
COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS IN POST-COVID-19 SYNDROME
According to the WHO and U.S. CDC, common symptoms of post-covid-19 syndrome include:
- Fatigue: most common; Dyspnea, or shortness of breath;
- Dizziness or lightheadedness when standing up;
- Headache;
- Chest pain;
- Nervous, tachycardia or palpitation …;
- Cough, sore throat, fever, changed taste and smell;
- Tinnitus, otalgia; Musculoskeletal pain;
- Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain;
- Anorexia;
- Sleep problems;
- Mood swings;
- Changes in menstrual cycle;
- Difficult in thinking or concentration (brain fog);
- Tingling sensation;
- Rash.
ADVICES FOR PATIENTS WITH POST COVID-19 SYNDROME:
After recovering Covid-19 infection, patients need to continue being supported or developed a proper work-rest-diet regimen, which is essential and important for comprehensive and rapid patient health recovery:
- Maintain appropriate sleep and rest time, mainly sleep at night rather than daytime to perform other health-recovery activities, such as gentle motion (slow walk, gentle exercise, very slow cycling (if possible), …
- Maintain pulmonary rehabilitation exercises, especially breathing exercises (inhale, exhale slowly, gradual deep breathing, gentle exhalation without haste, and increase the rate day by day).
- It is necessary for sun exposure at least 30 minutes/day (in the early morning or late afternoon, 3 – 4 times per day with 5 – 10 minutes for each), this would be helpful for your circadian rhythms.
- For those who have completed their home quarantine, encourage them to take part in family activities such as preparing meals, doing household chores in order to get back to normal activity condition soon.
- Especially for the elderlies, communication with family members and receiving family support, encouragement would be helpful in reducing anxiety, stimulating brain activities after Covid-19 recovery.
- Family members should encourage recovered covid-19 patients to participate in mental activities, such as reading books/newspapers, discussing about daily news… which significantly contribute to health recovery.
- Even when the patients have been recovered from Covid-19 and had negative test result, 5K rule is strictly complied when getting back to the normal life to protect themselves and community.
Health-related problems could be related to Covid-19 pandemic, including long-term hospital stay, asthenia and economic pressure, being isolated and unable to access healthcare services for potential disease management. Therefore, please contact and seek medical support from physicians and psychologists if you concern about above symptoms have not improved in at least 4 weeks post- Covid-19 recovery.
